What is Social Media?

and, why do you need it?

Wikipedia defines Social Media as:

computer-mediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks

Additionally, we further read that Social Media is different from the traditional method of spreading information in that the 'reach, usability, frequency and permanance' is so different from previous ways of getting your word out. 

People of all walks of life, all ages, and all nationalities count on Social Media every minute of every day...News sometimes breaks on this platform first!

It wasn't too long ago, perhaps in late 2010, that many small businesses jumped on the social media "wagon", heading for un-chartered territory, because they feared that not having a social media presence might be harmful to their business.

Some were skeptical: "who" said you need it? And then the next thing we knew, The New York Times had a full page spouting the need for small businesses to have a social media "presence". The rest is history...

For many businesses and organizations, it's been a great way to:

  • Promote a product or service
  • Update "fixes" and share instructions or changes to products and services
  • Advise students or parents of young children of school class cancellations as well as other important messages
  • Notify partiipants of event changes and/or cancellations
  • Notify customers and prospective customers of "sales" and special offers
  • Notify members of organizations of special events, changes or cancellations
  • Just be friendly and 'social'
For other businesses, particularly news sources, it's been a great way to spread worthwhile information, and yet, while you might expect it, there are tidbits of information spread unnecessarilly, but that is to be expected with any media, traidtional or otherwise.
